Winery Assistant - Spencer Manor Winery

Come join our team! Spencer Manor Winery in beautiful Saint James, MO is looking for a Winery Assistant. We are looking for a professional Winery Assistant to perform regular routine tasks required to maintain & care for grape vines, general cellar work and general grounds maintenance. The successful candidate will play a key role in contributing to our guest satisfaction and winemaking goals. Must be friendly, punctual, and a team player. Winery / Vineyard experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities - include but not limited

  • -Report to Vineyard/Maintenance Manager
  • -Answer, report and follow all operational instructions
  • -Comply with company regulations and safety standards
  • -Maintain a positive and professional approach with coworkers and guests

Vineyard Work 

  • -Cultivation, thinning, pruning, tying, suckering, canopy management, planting and replanting and harvesting
  • -Erosion control, trellis installation/maintenance, frost protection, vineyard installation, fence installation, Irrigation monitoring
  • -Monitoring for vine pests and disease issues
  • -Chemical application and recording processes
  • -General Vineyard equipment care and maintenance
  • -Operation of equipment such as tractors, tractor implements in order to accomplish various vineyard practices such as mowing, spraying, and hedging
  • -Machinery Operation of mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers for maintenance of grounds and landscaping
  • -Mulching, weeding and general maintenance of the wedding venue
  • -Follow safe operating procedures, maintain safety programs and policies to safeguard personal safety, company property, environmental and team member’s safety

Cellar Work 

  • Sampling and analysis Fermentation management
  • Racking, filling, stirring, and topping barrels Tank and barrel additions
  • -Assist in all aspects of the winemaking process, including fermenting, and conditioning.
  • -Operate winemaking equipment such as fermenters, and filters.
  • -Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of winemaking equipment.
  • -Clean and sanitize tanks and other equipment.
  • -Transfer wine between tanks, ensuring proper techniques to avoid contamination and oxidation
  • -Prepare wine for packaging by filtering out solids and yeast
  • -Add finings or other agents to wine if required
  • -Assist with the packaging of wine in kegs or bottles
  • - Ensure packaging lines are clean and properly set up.
  • -Take samples for quality checks.
  • -Monitor storage conditions to ensure flavor stability and longevity.
  • -Maintain detailed logs of cellar operations, including cleaning schedules, wine transfers, and quality tests.
  • Cleaning, Cleaning and more Cleaning

Grounds Keeping / Maintenance 

  • -Performing routine maintenance around the building
  • -Applying preventative measures to the building to reduce the risk of future problems
  • -Fixing potential safety hazards to avoid injuries
  • -Clearing rubbish, weeds, brush and debris on a company’s grounds
  • -Cleaning entrances, and patio
  • -Watering all flowers and plants on the grounds
  • -Weeding, trimming, and mulching plants using gardening tools
  • -Taking care of all groundskeeping supplies, tools and inventory
  • -Ensuring the grounds are clean, safe and usable by guest and visitors
  • -Removing dirt on sidewalks pavements and driveways
  • -Taking on special landscaping or planting projects as deemed necessary

Skills / Requirements 

  • -Must be able to work outdoors in extremes of heat/humidity/cold and other inclement weather conditions
  • -Must be able to walk on uneven ground and climb ladders
  • -Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • -Must be able to see clearly enough to drive safely
  • -Must be able to work long hours when required
  • -Must be able to sustain the repeated use of hands as well as long periods of standing, walking and bending
  • -Previous tractor experience preferred
  • -Ability to follow standard operating procedures and adhere to safety procedures
  • -Punctual, responsible and motivated
  • -Ability to work independently
  • -Ability to use good judgment
  • -Ability to work well with others
  • -Execute Assigned tasks with Accuracy and speed
  • -Able to follow instructions/directions
  • -Manual dexterity able to operate tools

  • -Very good physical condition and endurance
  • -High school diploma or equivalent is desirable
  • -A valid missouri driver’s license
